Halloween Season Safety: Tips for Your Pets

Halloween is a fun time for families, but it can be a little scary for our pets! At Neuse River Vets, we want to make sure your furry friends stay safe and happy this spooky season. Here are some important tips to help you and your pets enjoy Halloween without any tricks!

1. Keep the Treats Away from Pets
Halloween candy is delicious for humans but dangerous for pets. Chocolate and candies containing xylitol (a common sugar substitute) are toxic to dogs and cats. Make sure all candy bowls are out of reach, and keep a close eye on any wrappers left lying around.
2. Beware of Costumes
While pet costumes can be cute and fun, not all pets enjoy dressing up. If you plan to put your pet in a costume, make sure it fits properly and doesn’t restrict movement, vision, or breathing. Be on the lookout for any signs of discomfort, and if your pet seems stressed, it’s best to skip the costume.

3. Be Cautious with Decorations
Halloween decorations, especially ones with cords, strings, or small parts, can be hazardous to pets. Make sure your pet doesn’t have access to decorations that they can chew on, swallow, or knock over. Lit candles inside jack-o’-lanterns are particularly dangerous—use flameless candles instead!
4. Watch the Door
With trick-or-treaters coming and going, the doorbell ringing constantly, and strangers in costumes, Halloween night can be stressful for pets. Consider keeping your pet in a quiet room or secure area to prevent them from running out the door or feeling overwhelmed by the noise and excitement.

5. Identification is Key
Even with precautions, pets can sometimes slip out unnoticed during the Halloween chaos. Make sure your pet has proper identification, like a collar with updated tags or a microchip, so they can be quickly reunited with you if they get lost.
6. Glow Sticks and Glow Jewelry
Glow sticks and jewelry are fun for Halloween night but can be harmful if chewed by pets. The liquid inside glow sticks isn’t toxic, but it can cause discomfort and drooling. Keep glow items out of reach, and opt for pet-safe alternatives if you want your pet to be visible in the dark.

7. Comfort First
Some pets might be startled by the doorbell, costumes, or loud noises on Halloween night. Create a calm and cozy space for them to relax away from the commotion. Soft blankets, calming music, and their favorite toys can help reduce stress.

At Neuse River Vets, we love celebrating the holidays with our clients, but your pet’s safety is our top priority. Follow these tips to ensure that your pet has a safe and happy Halloween. If you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s health this season, don’t hesitate to give us a call!
